Plastic bags and posters.Advertising graphics drawn by Jari Koivisto from 1993-1996.
The Plastic Bag Museum is "a museum that doesn't really exist."It's an unusual hobby of documentary filmmakers Timo and Tarja Lapila that got out of hand.
The museum has tens of thousands of plastic bags in its collections. Free Choice's colourful plastic bags form a unique collection.
Vapaa Valinta was a discount supermarket chain operating in western Finland, with stores mainly in Satakunta, Southwest Finland and Pirkanmaa. In 2000, Vapaa Valinta had seven stores in Tampere. Vapaa Valinna was acquired by the Tokmanni group in 2004 and by 2014 all its stores were converted into Tokmanni stores.
Jari Koivisto is an illustrator and advertising artist who started his career at Wihuri Wholesale in 1979.
Over the years, the path led to Imagent Oy and from there to Advertising Agency Planet. The recession of the 1990s brought down domestic advertising companies and money became tight. Koivisto recalls:"I was considering retail advertising as one of the opportunities, which I had already experienced in my Wihuri days.At that time, self-respecting advertising agencies would not touch retail with a long stick, because promotional advertising was not fancy enough. Well, hunger drives the pig home. I did a speculative series of three ads for Free Choice, the discount store where I sometimes shop. I pitched my idea to our CEO Pertti Sänt, who set up a meeting with Juha and Paula Malminen, the owners of Vapaa Valinta. The announcements were so out of the ordinary that, after several stages of negotiations, the company agreed to try out our concept." In addition to advertising, the Vapaa Valinna concept included a tabloid newspaper published four times a year, in-store posters and banners, and plastic bags.
The exhibition features these plastic bags and banners, which are based on the four seasons.
