Perniö Plastic Bag Museum presents: free choice! 27.4.-1.6.2024

Pert's Choice, Hakaniemenkuja 2

Open: Wed-Fri 12-18, Sat 11-15

Plastic bags and posters.Advertising graphics drawn by Jari Koivisto from 1993-1996.

The Plastic Bag Museum is "a museum that doesn't really exist."It's an unusual hobby of documentary filmmakers Timo and Tarja Lapila that got out of hand.

The museum has tens of thousands of plastic bags in its collections. Free Choice's colourful plastic bags form a unique collection.

Vapaa Valinta was a discount supermarket chain operating in western Finland, with stores mainly in Satakunta, Southwest Finland and Pirkanmaa. In 2000, Vapaa Valinta had seven stores in Tampere. Vapaa Valinna was acquired by the Tokmanni group in 2004 and by 2014 all its stores were converted into Tokmanni stores.

Jari Koivisto is an illustrator and advertising artist who started his career at Wihuri Wholesale in 1979.

Over the years, the path led to Imagent Oy and from there to Advertising Agency Planet. The recession of the 1990s brought down domestic advertising companies and money became tight. Koivisto recalls:"I was considering retail advertising as one of the opportunities, which I had already experienced in my Wihuri days.At that time, self-respecting advertising agencies would not touch retail with a long stick, because promotional advertising was not fancy enough. Well, hunger drives the pig home. I did a speculative series of three ads for Free Choice, the discount store where I sometimes shop. I pitched my idea to our CEO Pertti Sänt, who set up a meeting with Juha and Paula Malminen, the owners of Vapaa Valinta. The announcements were so out of the ordinary that, after several stages of negotiations, the company agreed to try out our concept." In addition to advertising, the Vapaa Valinna concept included a tabloid newspaper published four times a year, in-store posters and banners, and plastic bags.

The exhibition features these plastic bags and banners, which are based on the four seasons.

Opening on Thursday 25 April at 18.00

With Kalevi Suopursu live performnce.

S.O.P. (Sound Of Pertti) Rap Blast! is coming again! May's event is a juicy collection of lyrical gems and tight beats. Adikia, who is preparing a new solo album, and 6kulma, who are on a good pace, will be on stage on Saturday 18.5! Come, see and experience!

6KULMA!

It is a Helsinki based rap band formed by rappers Hazard & Hugo Toosi. 6kulma!'s music is a combination of traditional rap and a fresh, unheard-of sound. Combining the razor-sharp rhymes of Hazard, known as the Finnish Rap Champion, with the more melodic expression of Hugo Toosi, the result is 6kulma! The band's debut EP "6Kulma;" was released in summer 2023, and in autumn 2024 the band will release their debut album Kill Your Idol.

Adikia

Adikia likes to rap and twirl her bum. The rap artist released her debut single Paha Bitch in 2017 and has since released 2 EPs and a debut album Mother. Adikia is interested in low bass, all kinds of screaming, tyttöjen juttut ja kapitalistisen järjestelmän kaataminen. Recently he has excelled as a feat artist on hit songs by Mc Koo, Sofa, Bämä and others. He is currently working on a new solo project and the second album by the duo Matriarchy with his colleague Mon-Sala. Matriarkaatti has released podcasts in addition to music and acts as a platform for female, non-binary and transmasculine artists in the hip hop scene. A year (vuosi) became a decade

VUOSI was originally a project by four sound artists (Ilpo Numminen, J. Koho, Olli Aarni ja Tuukka Salonen). The idea was to release 12 cassettes in one year (2014–2015), one each month. However, after the project was done, we wanted to continue as a loose collective.

VUOSI has performed all around Finland and in Estonia, released several records and done different sound installations for Ars Auttoinen, Akusmata, Kiilan Äänipäivät & Sorbus among others.

VUOSIPÄIVÄ celebrates this (almost) 10-year journey with a diverse program. Welcome!

ALGIS FEDIAJEVAS is an actively touring Lithuanian underground guitarist and singer-songwriter who recently released his fourth album titled Po trejų metų (“After three years”). The album was recorded in England with local musicians.

“Po trejų metų“ is both an exploration of the new musical territories and continuation of his previous activities. Algis plays a unique and exotic variation of psychedelic folk and experimental folk music. His songs are based on dialogues. One part of the dialogue is the fingerstyle acoustic guitar played in an unorthodox way with a lot of buzzing, vibrating and waving. Another part is sometimes calm, sometimes aggressive vocals and Algis’ own poetry sung in Lithuanian.

Algis lets his music ramble: it wanders from calm folky melodies to meditative Eastern sounds, to dissonant explosions. All this creates a distinctive psychedelic style and shamanic atmosphere.

EDGARS RUBENIS is a Latvian guitarist and composer with a background in experimental rock and new music composition. ”Pains And Boogies”, his current three-album project, explores the vitality of fingerpicked steel-string guitar traditions as a source for bold and contemporary music.

Working particularly with the forms of early blues and ragtime, in ”Pains And Boogies” Rubenis writes seemingly old yet entirely new music that reveals him as an elaborate guitar player and
adventurous, stylistically accurate composer. Risking blunder in search for possible authenticity, this music investigates how various historical materials could meaningfully reemerge at the current point in time. In concerts this music creates a highly charged atmosphere in which the “sole musician with an acoustic guitar” configuration offers audiences a clearly perceivable and exciting listening experience.

Edgars Rubenis first emerged on the underground music scene in mid-2000’s as the member of Riga’s experimental rock band Mona de Bo. Since his 2020 shift to working with acoustic guitar, Rubenis’ music has been featured on London's Resonance FM radio, in concerts along with the Welsh guitarist Gwenifer Raymond, Kadonnut Manner from Finland, and on various festivals and tours in France, Sweden, Belgium, The Netherlands and the Baltics

Marja Ahti (b. 1981) is a Swedish-Finnish composer and sound artist based in Turku, Finland. Ahti works with field recordings and other acoustic sound material combined with synthesizers and electronic feedback in order to find the space where these sounds start to communicate.

Atte Elias Kantonen is a sound laborer working in the fields of experimental music and performing arts. In his works, Kantonen explores the potential of elastic synthesis and extremely processed sound as vessels for abstract, phantasmagorical storytelling.

Azis Funck will perform free violin music from his upcoming album. Beautiful chaos, ecstatic noise and rain. Azis Funck is the solo project of Tuomas Alatalo (Cats of Transnistria, Stinkbird among others).

WILL GUTHRIE (AUS)

Will Guthrie is an Australian drummer / percussionist living in France. He plays solo using different combinations of drums, percussion, amplification and electronics, and leads the contemporary hybrid percussion / gamelan group ENSEMBLE NIST-NAH. His music has been released on labels such as Black Truffle, Editions Mego, Erstwhile, Clean Feed, Gaffer Records, Hasana Editions, 23five, iDEAL and his own label Antboy Music.

Guthrie first made a name for himself within the Australian jazz scene, establishing himself at a young age as a major presence by winning the Wangaratta National Jazz Awards for drums in 1997. In the new millennium, his work took a long detour away from the drum kit through junk electronics, extreme amplification and electro-acoustic techniques, documented on a series of solo and collaborative recordings from these years.
Alongside continuing his electro-acoustic work, in the last decade, Guthrie has returned to the drums with a vengeance, developing a series of solo works marked by a radical single-mindedness, from relentless rhythmic workouts to earth-quaking explorations of the bass frequencies of gongs and other metal percussion instruments.

In the crowded world of free jazz/improv percussion, Guthrie’s work is distinguished from the delicately pointillist approach of much European improvisation by its rhythmic sophistication, unashamed virtuosity and undeniable physicality, touching on aspects of world musics from Javanese gamelan to South Indian Carnatic music.

Guthrie has released over 50 Albums, as both soloist and in collaboration and is also a dedicated grassroots and DIY concert organiser. His numerous collaborators past and present include among others Orn Ambarchi, Sarah Hennies, Mark Fell, Roscoe Mitchell, Jérôme Noetinger and Keith Rowe.

SIMULTANELI

Taneli Viitahuhta is known as an energetic free saxophonist. In addition to this he is also interested in wind instruments as sounding tubes. In his solo project Simultaneli, he explores the layering and spreading of various sound sources.

KULTAPALMUT

Kultapalmut combine visual and sonic dimensions into a magical, modern day magic lantern performance, like an experimental Laterna Magica. Living picture and living sound are present simultaneously. In a way, the duo makes a movie in real time, a kind of expanded cinema. The shows include experiments and coincidence: a performance can never be replicated.

Pauliina Mäkelä and Topias Tiheäsalo utilize old analogue technology. Images reflected with overhead proectors are accompanied by the sounds of electric guitar, transistor radio and the camera flash. The Kultapalmut performances are direct and tangible experiences.

Mäkelä and TIhesäslo live together in Turku, both working with image and sound respectively. Mäkelä is an award-winning illustrator who works in the fields of visual art and comics. Tiheäsalo is a guitarist focusing on improvised and experimental music, while also making music programs for YLE Radio 1.

ARVID VAN DER RIJT

Arvid van der Rijt (b. Soltau, Germany, 1976) is an audiovisual artist whose work explores the potential of the senses.

Making use of multiple media and materials, he brings together the bricolage of everyday trash, colonial knickknacks and Western kitsch, building a symbiosis of the imaginable, the visible and the invisible. His immersive performances deal with the concepts of belonging and identity and build new constellations and labyrinths to help us find new ways of being lost, if nothing else.

His work has been shown in Finland and abroad including the Ann Arbor Film Festival, USA (2016), the Congo Biennale (2019), the AAVE Festival, Helsinki (2014) and Pixelache Festival, Helsinki (2021).

WESTON OLENCKI (USA)
”a vine that grew over the city and no one noticed" is precision machined Americana heard through the ears of the electromechanical banjo. It is performed on a mechanically prepared banjo with magnetic resonators, solenoid motors, AM radio transmitters, handheld radio, railroad spikes, carriage bolts, Markov-driven three-finger banjo picking, and a neural net generated resynthesis of The Carter Family's Will the Circle Be Unbroken (1935) as "performed" by the reanimated & digitized models of Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Hank Williams, Charley Pride, and many other singers long since departed to "the by and by".

EILIEN
emotional audio synthesis ~ SuperCollider pop music ~ digital daydreaming

Eilien produces genre-bending ambient music combining text-based coding, field recordings and their own voice. Their debut album Digital Lovers, was released 2021 by Prague based label Genot Centre, collaborating together with Eero Pulkkinen. DJ Mag described the album as a "10-track trip through glowing ambience, mesmerising dream pop, musique concrète and deconstructed trance".

PIIA RINNE
In the collage-based music of Piia Rinne, stretching and collapsing cassette samples are becoming ghostly new lofi layers of sound. By cutting, pasting and adding new instruments in the mix, RInne creates overflowing, sticky and sprained beats that operate with tthe logic of coincidences and limitations. PASSEPARTOUT DUO

Passepartout Duo is formed by pianist Nicoletta Favari (IT) and percussionist Christopher Salvito (US/IT).
They have been on a nearly continuous world tour ever since they began collaborating in 2015, and their experiences traveling have heavily influenced their unconventional creative process. They keep looking for ways of sustaining an independent musical career and shaping an international network of artists and musicians. Continually reassessing the tools they use to create their music, the group is continually developing a specialized and evolving ecosystem of handmade musical instruments that have ranged from analog electronic circuits and conventional percussion, to room-size textile installations and found objects. The centerpiece of their live set is the Chromaplane, a new electronic instrument the Duo has created over the past year.

FORCES
Constantly mutating rhythms and sharp digital textures shape the sound of Forces. Forces is the electronic music project of Finnish interdisciplinary artist Joonas Siren. Different live-coding and processing techniques are used to make dense atomized swirls; electronic and sometimes chaotic abstract oceans of sound. For the Pertin Valinta concert they will make a special MIDI themed performance. An 80s Casio MIDI saxophone will act as a centerpiece triggering dozens of sounds with random logic.

HETA BILALETDIN
Heta Bilaletdin (Myttys, Olimpia Splendid) collects sounds at home and out in the fields, using them to create dusty beats, underwater visions, mumbling songs, concrete music and deconstructed dub.

USTAD NOOR BAKHSH (Pakistan)

Pertin Valinta is honoured to host world-famous Pakistani musician Ustad Noor Bakhsh. He performed at this year’s Roskilde Festival and will head to the Le Guess Who? Festival in Utrecht after the shows in Finland. There have been extensive articles about Noor Bakhsh recently for example in The Guardian and in The Wire.

79-year old Ustad Noor Bakhsh, from near Pasni, Balochistan, is a maestro of the Balochi Benju (a keyed zither), which he has played since he was a child. The Benju was once a Japanese children’s toy called the taishōkoto before it was adopted by Balochi musicians and made into the refined folk instrument that it is today.

Noor Bakhsh plays an electric Benju, getting his sound through an old pickup and small Phillips amp he bought from Karachi 2 decades ago. He carries forward the legacy of his teachers, combining this with influences from several directions. His repertoire includes Persian, Kurdish, Arab and even Bollywood music. Noor Baksh’s tone, melodic ornamentations and polyrhythms are also at times reminiscent of the music of West as well as East Africa. He has several original compositions too, including one inspired by bird songs.

Noor Bakhsh is well known as a legendary instrumentalist throughout the Makran Coast, but only garnered wider attention after his most recent recordings and videos. His debut album, 'Jingul‘, was released digitally in September 2022, and will be out on vinyl in September.

Pekka Airaksinen - Meditatiiviset maailmat

The meditative worlds of Pekka Airaksinen

The visual art of the pioneer of Finnish avantgarde and electronic music, Pekka Airaksinen (1945-2019), is rarely shown in public. His body of work includes countless hours of compositions, concerts, writings and hundreds of paintings. The paintings in this exhibition have been selected from a private collection by meditation teacher Maarit Vainio.

In the late 60’s, Airaksinen was a key figure in the Helsinki underground art scene. Back then, performances and releases with the band Sperm caused confusion but are now internationally recognized and lauded works with a cult reputation.

Airaksinen stayed away from the public since the early 70’s after he found meditation and Buddhism. However, withdrawing to the peace and quiet of the countryside and focusing on meditation did not mean less composing and painting. On the contrary, his production is breathtakingly broad and comprehensive.

As a dedicated practicer and teacher of meditaion, Pekka Airaksinen drew everything from meditative worlds. He said that his paintings were merely a pale inkling of what he saw while meditating. For the viewer, the paintings provide an unusually fascinating combination of clarity and perplexing diversity. The simple painting technique emphasizes the compositions, making them very concrete. In a way, the paintings are simultaneously familiar and unknown. Just like Pekka’s music.

The exhibition is part of Alakulttuuripäivä (Subculture Day) 2023 and has been made possible by the Perttu Häkkinen foundation.

MODERNI ORJUUS MYRTILLIUS KAURIA

Myrtillius Kaurian Moderni orjuus -näyttely järjestetään osana Helsinki Design Week festivaalia 8.-30.9.2023. Näyttelyn on kuratoinut Pertin Valinnan näyttelymestari, valokuvaaja Pekka Elomaa.

Ohjelman teemana on valta.

Myrtillius Kauria’s Modern Slavery Exhibition in Pertin valinta Gallery 8.-30.9.2023.

Myrtillius Kauria’s Modern Slavery is an HDW commissioned exhibition, which will be on display at the Pertti’s Choice Gallery 8.-30.9.2023. Hakaniemenkuja 2. The gallery is open Wed-Fri 2-6PM and on Sat 11Am-3PM.

Myrtillius Kauria is a self taught artist who works in Outsider Art Festival’s OAF Academy, a new art programme funded by the Kone Foundation. The theme of the programme is power. Exhibition is curated by Pekka Elomaa.

Kauria’s rya rag and animation works highlight the life of modern slaves, economical challenges and social exclusion, cronic feeling of unworthyness and fear for the future.

“Unlike traditional craft work mythologies my work feature every day life experiences of poor and marginalised people. Despite the heavy thematics, my art works are hilarious, playful and slighly irrational.”

In addition to the exhibition, Pertin valinta and HDW host to Talks events: In Pertin valinta 8.9. at 5PM and in Merikortteli on Friday 15th at 3PM.

Dxxxa D: MOI

!The "MOI"-exhibition presents a series of paintings by Dxxxa. Among other things, the series aestheticizes trivial words and phrases, spews out small talk, gives bad tips and tries to paint a picture of itself as a good guy. On the other hand, some completely abstract pantings are also included. The paintings can be viewed either as paintings or as extremely bareboned poetry that conflicts with the rich colours of the paintings. Mundanity reaches a monumental scale, almost becoming a philosophical school of thinking.

Dxxxa D is a visual and spoken word artist who has released a dozen albums, both  as a solo artist and as a part of different groups. Having originally started as a rapper, Dxxxa has in the 21st century broadened his expression over genre boundaries, incorporating spoken word, free jazz and improvised music.

The opening celebration takes place on Thu 1st June 17.00-21.00There will be deejays and a "light-ish" live set by Dxxxa

HANNA KEYNÄS - KEPPULI

The exhibition features paintings and installations by Keynäs from 2012–2021. The name of the exhibition, Keppuli, is Keynäs' word for a plastic object or cup that makes you feel good when you hold it in your hand.

Hanna Keynäs has painted defending the maximum freedom of color and form. There is nothing hypocritical about her paintings, they don't seek to exalt, but they don't preach either. Veikko Halmetoja, who curated the exhibition, writes about Keynäs' art.

Hanna Keynäs, born 1963, is a visual artist from Helsinki. She has received art teaching and guidance in the services offered by the Autism Foundation. Keynäs' first solo exhibition was in 2012 at Galleria Art Kaarisilta in Helsinki. She was chosen as Kettuki association artist of the year 2017 and the solo exhibition related to the recognition was seen in the same year at Galleria Valo in Rovaniemi. Keynäs participated in numerous group exhibitions over the years, the most significant of which was the Mäntä Art Weeks 2018. Keynäs's painting The Hospital was added to the collection of the State Works of Art Commission in 2012.

Jonna Karanka: A kiss from Hannele

In Jonna Karanka's textile works, ancient rag knots are combined with more unorthodox thread techniques and psychophysical entities built on the terms of materials. Tapestry, rugs and textile collages are constructed using different thread techniques: knotting, threading, coiling and sewing. Working is slow and often physical.

Karanka graduated with a Master of Arts from Aalto University's College of Arts and Design in 2012. Previous solo exhibitions have included e.g. Das kosmische Schachspiel (KOUTA gallery, Kouvola, 2022) and We might feel the groove (HAM gallery, Helsinki, 2018). In addition to visual arts, he makes music solo under the name Kuupuu and in ensembles such as Olimpia Splendid, Hertta Lussu Ässä, Hockey Night and Kukkiva Poliisi.

BROMP TREB (USA)

Bromp Treb is the solo noise/music performance and recording project of artist Neil Young aka Neil ‘Cloaca’ Young. Since 2002 Bromp Treb has put many recordings in circulation and has performed at fancy-pants places like ICA Boston and the High Zero Festival as well as countless basements, bars, lofts, living rooms, closets and art spaces all around North America and Europe. Bromp Treb is onomatopoeia, it is the sputterings of refined dysfunction and eager uncertainty. An improvised maze of crooked rhythms and tangled textures made with voice, synthesis, percussion and movement, maybe a little physical comedy. (photo by Susanna Bolle)

Kuupuu is Jonna Karanka's super buzz project, whose first releases hit the world 20 years ago. The sound fabric that combines strange frequencies, loops, underwater incantation and twisted free folk has attracted attention from all over the world, and Kuupuu's records have been released in addition to Finland, e.g. in the United States and Japan.

RENE KITA Rene Kita is a one-person improvising chamber choir. Everything possible for the human voice is driven into the repeater pedals until the hall is filled with a polyrhythmic fabric that changes all the time.

Valtteri Kleemola works in Lyhty ry's general workshop and has participated in Lyhty's (www.lyhty.fi) photography workshop run by photographer Pekka Elomaa since 2017.

Kleemola's work has been seen earlier this year at, among others, Ruisrock and the Outsider Art Festival at the Helsinki City Art Museum.
