PERTTI’S CHOICE IS BUZZING. All around you can hear different types of music; soul, schlager, jazz, reggae, rock, punk, heavy metal etc. You can hear poetry as well as someone composing on a piano, somewhere you can hear children’s songs and somewhere hymns.
Lyhty ry’s music workshop has been the spring board for artists and bands that Pertti’s Choice proudly represents; the now-retired Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät, also known from the Eurovision Song Contest, Kalle Salonen who has released two of his own albums, and the artist and poet Kalevi Helvetti. You will hear from many. Composing, writing, rehearsing and recording at the music workshop are also the poet and experimental music performer Dimitri Baltzar, reggae artist Kari Matti Alias Aalto, the children’s music duet Hassut Tassut, schlager band Taikasydän, Jutta Tahvanainen, composer of new music Sam Heat, avant-garde guitarist Marja Heimonen and the rock band Bergenstein. Creation is constant and it draws from many directions
Pertti’s Choice’s musical selection is as versatile as are its artists. And as it is said on Kalle Salonen free jazz trio Organ Free’s Facebook page: “we are free, take us, Organ Free!”
KALLE SALONEN’s music has that irresistible attraction. This talented Hammond virtuoso can easily catch the listeners attention with his magical musical worlds based on jazz, funk, soul and blues music. It is not strange after all, because Salonen became familiar with many musical instruments already as a little child and you can hear the experience of many years’ in his production. The sounds are flowing into your ears like warm wind with professional, experienced touch, seasoned with delicate nuances.
Salonen has been leading the Kalle Salonen Band since 2012 as the driving force and beating heart of the band. The band's producer and drummer Hannu Pikkarainen has been closely involved in music making. The chemistry between Salonen and Pikkarainen is magnificent and they work great together. The band has released two full-length albums, Cat Slide (2013, Texicalli) and Barracuda Man (2016, Texicalli). Both albums are collections in which you can hear Salonen's unlimited love for all genres. This sophisticated, addictive jamming will make your hips swing!

ORGAN FREE is Kalle Salonen’s project for happening jazz and more liberal expression. In addition to the Hammond organ, Salonen has taken his virtuosity to the various worlds of the synthesizer. Paragons include, amongst others, Peter Brötzman, Paal Nielsen Love, Ken Vandermark, Mats Gustavsson and Evan Parker. Paraphrasing Kalle Salonen himself, he has stepped into the world of space, psychedelia, fizz and joy. Organ Free is a trio with Hannu Pikkarainen on the drums, Antero Priha on trumpet and Kalle Salonen on keyboard.
SAM HEAT aka Sami Helle is a singer–songwriter, who is known as the legendary bassist of Finnish punk band Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät. In 2013, Helle recorded the jazz cassette Just a Standard Guy with his band Sami Helle Quintet. Years went by and Sami Helle continued to play music. At last, in 2019, Sam Heat released his long-awaited full-length solo album Blue Moments though Finnish label Hikinauhat. Helle has written all the lyrics and compositions for the songs. On the album, Helle sings in English and plays the piano with a breath-takingly tender touch. This is sheer honey for the ears!
The lyrics on the album Blue Moments are written in an honest, captivating way. The songs are about important things for Sam Heat, without irony or humour, just the way he feels his everyday life. He is telling stories about racing cars, coffee and his dad, amongst others. The songs come directly from the artist's heart - they draw Helle's life story, what happened in the past and how will the life be in future. Sam Heat doesn't compose music like the other artists do, and no one else can compose music like Sam Heat does. The music of Sam Heat is enjoyably flowing, unique art full of many feelings, making the listener cry sweet tears of joy.

TAIKASYDÄN – OF LOVE AND LOVE FOR MUSIC
TAIKASYDÄN (Magic heart) is the result of many years of work. Taikasydän was founded by Niila, young fan of pop music. At the time Taikasydän played modern electronic pop. Toni Välitalo was chosen as the drummer of the band, other band members came and went. Toni was playing with another band too, Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät, which later became very famous.
When Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät went on their first tour abroad in Germany in 2010, Niila was hired as a roadie for the band. Working together went well until a young songstress joined the work place. Both Niila and Toni fell in love – not with each other, but with this songstress. The friendship between Niila and Toni foundered, and Jutta was indecisive between the two men.
Niila quit from being the roadie for Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät which angered the band, except for Toni who was very pleased with the situation. Nevertheless, Jutta chose Niila as her bridegroom. As life goes on, some relationships last, some do not. The latter happened with Jutta and Niila as well and Niila left Taikasydän, which had been kept on hold. Nowadays Niila is in a permanent employment and in a happy relationship.
Later on, Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät disbanded and Toni needed an active band. By this time yet another promising schlager singer, Arttu Mäenpää, had come to the work place. A new band that plays old humppa (traditional fast-paced Finnish music), tango, waltz, schlager and more, was built around Toni. Kalle Salonen, Toni’s old childhood friend who had already released two funky albums of his own, was chosen to play the organ and accordion.
Arttu Mäenpää and Jutta Tahvanainen took the stage as the singers of the band. A name already existed. Taikasydän has risen from the ashes!
And the love was rekindled; this time Jutta chose Toni.
KARI MATTI ALIAS AALTO
Sba-daba-dub-a-daba will be heard in the chorus of this summer’s number one hit song. The song is reggae artist Kari Matti Alias Aalto’s own production. The singer, known from Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät for example, has loved relaxed and peaceful reggae since he was a child. One of his all-time favorites are Bob Marley and the Wailers. Kari’s reggae is sung in Finnish and he’s worked the songs with producer Hannu Pikkarainen. Kari Matti Alias Aalto is currently recording his first album, which will be released later in 2019. Live performances will be held with the newly formed live band Kari Aalto & Rastakarai – we’ll see you at the gigs!
Formed in 2018 and lead by Helsinki-based singer-songwriter Antti Vuorikivi, Bergenstein is a fierce art-rock band. The songs Vuorikivi composes and writes are realistic stories of life’s joys, sorrows, roughness, and beauty, seasoned with some surrealistic flavours. Blessed with a sharp rhythmic ear and understanding for language, Vuorikivi began writing songs when he was just a teenager, but Vuorikivi feels that with Bergenstein he has reached a new level as a song-writer and composer.
”I know how to tune and improvise.”
MARJA HEIMONEN is a guitarist and synthesizer artist. She has played the guitar since she was a child and nowadays visits music lessons actively. Heimonen joined the Lyhty’s music workshop in 2015 and started composing her solo material right away. Heimonen's music has always had ambient elements and emphasis on improvisation. The soundscape floats through the synthesizer arpeggiator and guitar delay pedals. What an intoxicating, psychedelic soup of sounds!
Heimonen's music is soothing, bold, experimental and original; like a sea of different melodies you want to dive into and stay. Her music does not have an established genre, because the songs vary from modal jazz to electronic ambiance. In addition to solo production, Heimonen also plays standard guitar in Dimitri Baltzar’s ensembles, for example. The soundscape of Heimonen's music is stunning in all of its uniqueness: we will hear about this talented woman!
PKN disbanded but that didn’t stop Toni and the new bands. Hassut Tassu Duo came into being in autumn 2018 when Eeva Lusenius started working at Lyhty. Toni Välitalo was playing drums in the back room and Eeva sat down on the piano and started singing and playing Fröbelin Palikat. That was it; a new group was born.
Hassut Tassut (Funny paws) perform famous children’s songs and also create their own material. “In the beginning we were called Lastensydän (Children’s heart) because we are a bit childish. We like children’s songs and we still listen to them,” explains the keyboardist Eeva Lusenius. The duo tells the name Hassut Tassut comes from the song Faaraon Kissa (Pharaoh’s cat). “Pharaoh’s cat has sandpaper paws. When you feel them they tickle,” annotates Eeva.
